Words are so powerful that they can either save or destroy you within seconds.
So today I made a mistake and put my signature as a witness on a piece of document without thoroughly reading through. In less than 60 seconds I realized that I was going to let someone who owed almost $200,000 walk away. By the time I realized it, the person had driven off and I had less than a minute to think of a solution. My heart was racing and all i could think of was the amount of trouble i had just gotten into.
I decided to pause for a second to think then i decided to call the person up and calmly asked the person to return because i had forgotten to include an information. The person asked if everything was ok and i said yes.
Within ten minutes, the individual returned and when i told the individual that i needed the document back because my signature need not be there since the statement was not entirely true, the individual refused to give it back. Other people walked in and started making a big deal and the individual got upset. In my head, i am thinking, lord i need a strategy to get this individual to tear up this document or return it to me.
As the individual walked towards the car, i calmly reminded the individual how great of a person he was and how big of a trouble i could get into by having my signature on that document. i robbed all the Ego that i could see and appealed to his senses. This individual didn't know when he dropped the document back on my table.before he could pronounce the word Jack, i had the document back in my hand. we reasoned together and i tore the document.
We both made peace and i ended up getting my sanity back . LOL
Lesson Learnt
Read a document over and over again before putting your signature on it and more importantly choose your words wisely when dealing with a conflict. This could be at your place of work, your home , your family etc.
You never loose when you say the right words at the right time.
